A super time was had by all at the Loughton Forest Family Fun Day, 30th May 2017. One hundred and forty four visitors came to Loughton Brook Storage Pond for a fun afternoon of minibeast hunting.  There was pond dipping, meadow sweeping, tree investigations and identification. Visitors ranged from a 3 week old to grandparents and everyone took away with them a new fact about our forest.

Highlights of the day included:

  • Finding hundreds of tadpoles and many fish
  • Catching a large dragonfly nymph
  • Identifying a palmate newt
  • Using the magnifying pots to look for features
  • Finding a rainbow of colours on natural palettes
  • Learning the difference between crickets and grasshoppers
  • Learning to work together and making new friends
  • Identifying trees using a free FSC guide

The event was funded by Loughton Town Council. This is the fourth year the event has run, following events in 2013,2014 and 2015. We look forward to delivering this event in the future and welcome the assistance of Loughton Town Council.
